When my child started in Prep she would *only* wear the dress - somewhere around Gr 4/5 she swapped to culottes & polos. You couldn’t get her into the knit shorts (except perhaps on pain of death) & she only owns 1 dress shirt for choir/band. I don’t have an issue with providing both formal & sport options and then allowing students to choose for themselves within those options.

Could we just have one unisex uniform of polo shirt & shorts in primary school? Nothing is formal enough for children to have to wear gendered uncomfortable clothes, they'll get enough of that as adults. And one hat too, please. It's expensive to have to buy formal & sports uniforms for both genders, if that's what you've got.

Yep. And why girls should be encouraged to wear shorts. And why the P&C is going to look at alternative hat options to present to the school and parents for consideration. The current hat restricts running style and climbing play. It’s not sun safe when not worn properly (which it often isn’t). And makes cycling inconvenient.

DDs school has a dress option, as well as polo shirt and shorts/skort. DD will only wear the dress as its easier to play in and fits her body shape better. I'm glad the girls get choices, but boys only get 1 option which seems very unfair.

All sounds like common sense. Except that we know there are a lot of unproven, unprovable factors. We might not feel sports attire would be appropriate for inter high school Anzac ceremonies or debates, or orchestra performances. Then you end up with all sorts of ‘club’ uniforms or add-ons. So once again cost comes in. The cost herring is always thrown in. But the money spent on kids’ clothes now is breathtaking. Look at schools with no uniform and the competition that causes with wardrobe. There are of course, lots of families who really struggle financially but a hardy uniform was designed exactly to aid this. P and C groups over the past half century have often been the force behind changing uniforms to suit their current tastes, often under the pretext that it is unliked by the students. Students will rebel against lots of rules: the uniform provides one of the least worrying so this is one of its biggest merits.

I would love to see a move towards sports uniform! More affordable for parents, more comfortable for students. I absolutely hate the formal uniform concept!

Wearing the uniform correctly shows pride in yourself and the school.
